DEF STAN 02-833, or NES 833, is a nickel aluminium bronze manufactured to the exacting requirements of the Ministry of Defence (MoD). This grade has been developed primarily for offshore and marine applications and features high strength, excellent corrosion resistance in seawater and many other aggressive media and high wear and abrasion resistance.
The particular characteristics of DEF STAN 02-833 that enable its impressive physical properties include a nickel content exceeding the iron content in order to achieve good corrosion resistance. The MoD also specifies impact properties on sizes above 15mm diameter and a full ultrasonic inspection in order to conform with the requirements of DEF STAN 02-729 Part 5. Heat treatment is carried out on smaller diameter rods to control the microstructure and phases present.
