Columbia Metals has provided sponsorship to a specialist garden furniture designer for an exhibition stand at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Gloucestershire-based David Murphy will be showcasing a selection of spheres at the event made from CZ101 brass supplied by Columbia Metals.
CZ101 is a brass alloy containing approximately 90% copper and 10% zinc. Its attractive rich golden colour and cold formability make it a widely used material for architectural and decorative applications. David’s creations showcase the versatility of this alloy, which can be readily Tig welded and has excellent non-corrosive properties that make it suitable for outside display conditions.
The spheres on display range in size from 1.2m diameter down to 0.75m diameter. Each one features exquisitely crafted elements that make up the sculpture, including leaves, trees, planets, stars, flowers, birds and butterflies.
Columbia Metals initially supplied David with CZ101 brass sheet in early 2020, just before the introduction of social restrictions to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic. David had planned to exhibit his designs at the Chelsea Flower Show in May that year, but the event was cancelled due to the government restrictions in place. For the first time in its 108-year history, this year’s Chelsea Flower Show is being held in the autumn
David’s sculptures can be viewed at stand WA59. The RHS Chelsea Flower Show runs from 21-26 September.
