C109 is a free-machining grade of oxygen-free copper with an addition of around 0.5% tellurium. The tellurium content raises the machinability rating to 90% (free machining brass = 100%) with minimal effect on conductivity values and ductility. The tellurium is present as a fine distribution of copper telluride particles which act as a chip-breaker during machining.
This grade has superior machinability over copper sulphur as it is based on the oxygen-free grade which gives it freedom from hydrogen embrittlement. This aspect also enables the use of C109 in electrical and electronic applications where accuracy and intricacy are required.
